In July 2004, Prof. Dr. PAUL DEMARET, Rector of the College of Europe, invited our Association to act as national selection body and to organize the selection of Bulgarian citizens who want to go to the College – to both its campuses in Bruges, Belgium (specialized Master programmes in several fields) and in Natolin (Warsaw), Poland (Letter from prof. Demaret).

The Association elects its honorary members (honorary persons) with a view to their contribution to Bulgaria’s integration in the European Union.

A representative of the former students of the College of Europe takes part in the selection of Bulgarian applicants for studying in the College.

Since 1993

The former students of the College of Europe hold regular meetings, to which they invite honorary guests to special thematic discussions. Among the latter are top administrators in the Bulgarian government and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, diplomats from the European Commission Delegation in Bulgaria and from the embassies of EU member states in Sofia, civil servants of the European Commission, representatives of academic circles in Bulgaria and abroad who work in the field of European integration. As a rule, these meetings are held on the first Thursday of the month.

On 24 October, the Bulgarian section of the international debate club “Cafe Babel” was opened in Sofia with the active involvement of members of our Association.

From January till October, ABSKEB took part in the implementation of the project “The European Security and Defence Policy and the Bulgarian Army”, coordinated by the “Army and Civil Society” Foundation under the “Europe 2003” programme of the European Commission Delegation in Bulgaria.

From July to September, ABSKEB took part in the implementation of the “Europe on wheels” project, coordinated by the “MARC Communications” public relations agency under the Information programme of the European Commission Delegation in Bulgaria.

On 21 February, a Jean Monnet conference “We in the European Debate”, was held in Sofia, organised by ABSKEB and the Academic Network for the Future of Europe, in cooperation with the Bulgarian European Community Studies Association (BECSA)

On 5 February, an open session of the Parliamentary Committee on European Integration is held in the National Assemble, which is at the same time a discussion forum on the topic “We in the European Debate – Institutional Reform in the EU”, organised by ABSKEB and the Academic Network for the Future of Europe, in cooperation with the Institute for European Studies and Information.

Between June 2002 and February 2003, ABSKEB is the coordinator of the Academic Network for the Future of Europe on the implementation of the project “Animating the “Future of Europe” debate among lecturers and students in Bulgarian universities”.

In the spring of this year, the Association launches and successfully accomplishes the initiative of decorating Dr. Marc VUIJLSTEKE with the order “Madarski konnik” (Madara Horseman) – 1st degree, completed on the eve of 24 May – the day of the cyrillic alphabet, Bulgarian education, science and culture.

The Association renews its legal registration, in conformity with the requirements of the law on non-profit making organisations.

In August, the Association provides assistance in sending Bulgarian participants in the student school on relations between Russia and the countries of Central and Eastern Europe in the context of European integration, which is organised by the Centre for Integration research and Programmes in St. Petersburg on 15-22 October 2000.

On 6 April, ABSKEB and the Institute for European Studies and Information – Sofia organize a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the College of Europe with a public lecture of Mr. Nicholas CLEGG, Member of the European Parliament and former student of the College.

Between March and May, the Association takes part, together with the Bulgarian European Community Studies Association (BECSA), in the setting up of a “Team Europe” data base of experts in European integration in Bulgaria.

Between February and April, ABSKEB organizes for Bulgaria the launching of a competition “EMECE” for multi-cultural education and European citizenship, announced by the “Salvador de Madariaga” Foundation and targeted at young people at the age of 16-18 years.

In February, ABSKEB and the Civic Education Project organize a moot court in European law for students from Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”, Plovdiv University “Paisii Hilendarski” and the Burgas Free University, after which they hold a ïîðåäèöà series of lectures for opening public administration to students.

The former students of the College of Europe in Bulgaria institutionalize their activities by the creation of this Association as a non-governmental non-profit making organisation.
